The Last Thrillville (in a movie theater) this Thursday, July 22, 2010

It's been a great ride, as the saying goes, but after 13 1/2 years, I'm exhausted and creatively spent. Time to switch to a horse of a different color, at least.  My long-running "Thrillville" show, as most people think of it - meaning the "cult movie cabaret" featuring classic and some contemporary B movies, the Magic Tiki (which replaced the Big Wheel after Speakeasy Theaters folded), the guest live band or burlesque act, Monica Tiki Goddess and me dancing to our theme song by the Moon-Rays - is about to end, making way for my new, scaled back film series, Forbidden Thrills at Forbidden Island, and the self-resuscitation of my literary career.  I am going out with a bang, natch - proudly presenting the long-delayed West Coast premiere of the ultimate lucha monster movie, MIL MASCARAS VS THE AZTEC MUMMY, which also features famous luchadores such as El Hijo del Santo and Blue Demon Jr., on a double bill with its follow-up, ACADEMY OF DOOM, also starring the legendary Mil the Thrill and featuring the return of the legendary Mexican monster, the Brainiac. This is part of the esteemed Another Hold in the Head annual indie horror/sci-fi film festival, and our debut at the legendary Roxie Theater in San Francisco. Even more appropriately, my theatrical swan song band will feature Oakland's Latin surf-rockers Carne Cruda, who closed the Parkway last year. They just won Best Song in Oakland Magazine for their anthem "Oakland's Tight," the featured track on their new album - and Oakland really needs the boost in self-esteem these days. I couldn't ask for a better send-off. It's truly the End of an Era, even as a new one dawns. Salud, and thanks for the thrills!
